Marigolds, Wax myrtle and Geraniums. Try herbs like lemon tyme, lemon basil and lemon grass. All these have various reviews as to how well they work but the Wax myrtle is where they actually get the organic bug repellant.

Garden Plants That Repel Fleas ….

While there are many products available that repel and kill fleas, many of us are searching for a simpler, safer way to eliminate these pests from both inside and outside of our homes. There are several plants that will repel fleas the natural way, while adding beauty to the yard and garden. Fleas will generally stay away from certain herbs and plants. Fleas usually don't like plants that have strong-smelling volatile oils such as catnip, sage, thyme, garlic, and peppermint. Other plants that have been known to be flea-unfriendly are Canadian fleabane, fennel foliage, juniper, and marigolds. It is extremely important to know, however, that not all plants are safe for cats and or dogs. Fleas also dislike citrus odors, so you can simply spray the lawn with a citrus-scented dishwashing detergent, such as lemon-scented Joy. Just dilute the soap with water and spray it all around your lawn and garden. You can also scatter lemon and orange rinds around your garden and flowerbeds.

Lavender

While lavender is not the easiest plant to grow, it is well worth the effort. Not only is it one of the most beautiful herbs, it has a wonderful, fresh scent. The small flowers can be gathered and dried, then sprinkled in a pet's bed to keep fleas away indoors. The plants themselves will help keep them away outside. Lavender grows well in full sun and dry soil. An alkaline soil will increase it's fragrance. It will not grow in wet, humid areas, and should be protected where winters are harsh. Lavender is not toxic to either dogs or cats.

Rosemary

Like lavender, rosemary loves the heat, but it is much more tolerant of different climates, and is much easier to grow. It will grow into a shrub in temperate areas, where it may live for several decades. In areas where winters are severe, it should be grown as a potted plant, and brought indoors for the winter. Placing a pot or two near an animal's bed will help keep fleas away. The leaves can also be scattered in pet beds. Rosemary's leaves resemble pine needles, and it has a fresh, pungent scent. It is non-toxic as well.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is actually a fast growing tree, which will grow in temperate climates, where the temperature does not go too far below freezing. In colder areas it can be grown indoors. Eucalyptus is toxic to pets, so it should never be put directly on an animal's fur. The dried leaves can be placed in areas that they cannot get to, such as underneath a carpet or pet bed.

Pyrethrum

The beautiful daisy like flower of the pyrethrum makes it extra desirable to have in the garden. It is a member of the chrysanthemum family, and is the most common natural insecticide in commercial preparations. It is easy to grow in almost any climate. It prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Pyrethrum flowers should be picked off when wilted, to encourage re-blooming. While not highly toxic to pets, direct contact should be avoided.

Pennyroyal

This is a tough plant that may spread too much throughout the garden, so it may be best grown as a potted herb. It is not edible, but its strong scent is terrific for repelling fleas. It has been used on dogs for many years, but is highly toxic to cats. It should be grown in partial shade or full sun. Depending on the severity of the growing climate, it may need to be replanted each spring. The pennyroyal scent may be too strong for some. It works well when planted where a dog will lay on it, or when added to their sleeping areas.

Mints

Mints are one of the easiest plants to grow. They can be a little too aggressive, but they are easily pulled up in areas where they are not wanted. Very safe and easy to grow, different types of mint can be dried and sprinkled on pet beds, between couch cushions, under carpets, or just about anywhere. Since most mints smell great, it is not offensive to have all around the home. Mints are perennial, and should be cut back frequently. They love full sun and dislike wet soil.

There are countless other plants that can be grown in the garden, or in pots on patios and decks, to help keep fleas at bay. Wormwood, fleabane, chamomile, basil and rosemary may all repel fleas as well. Since all of these plants are an attractive addition to the garden, it is worth giving them a try.
