To survive for a short period of time in Death Valley, we must find water - but our bodies can only process fresh water. People perspire, allowing the evaporating water to pull the heat away from our bodies, but then we must replace the lost water. It would be helpful if you had a sharp object, such as a knife, to cut open a cactus. Because cacti absorb water to survive, they will be full of fresh water. You will need some kind of container to retain this water.
Our activity can also be timed to avoid the hottest part of the day. We may share some habits with desert wildlife to beat the heat and dryness, but our real success comes from our ability to change our surroundings to meet our needs. We could try not to move around much or do lots of physical activity during the day, as we would very rapidly overheat and dehydrate. If a thin, white sheet was available, it would be a good idea to dig under the sand (where it is cooler and more humid), and lie there, with the sheet covering you. The light colour will reflect the sun and protect you from it.
It is important to remember that it becomes very cold during the night, and therefore it might be wise to act nocturnal to stay warm during the nights. It would not be a good idea to stay in self-made burrows or under the sand at this time, but rather stay on the hotter sand.
Of course, however good you are adapting to and surviving hot, arid conditions, we will never be able to survive as well as its wildlife residents. We would last, at most, a few days, and therefore without rescue it would be impossible to live there for longer than a month.
