Lenin aimed to create a revolutionary alliance with the peasants and create a Dictatorship of the proletariat as well as promoting revolution in Western Europe, ending political oppression and social injustice and to socialise the economy by removing private ownership and the profit motive.
Lenin's aims and beliefs had an effect on the policies he created. His aim to socialise the economy can be seen in war communism. In war communism all companies were nationalized and the government decided what should be produced. The government also had the power to force men and women to work in certain industries.
Another policy which came after War Communism was the NEP (New Economic Policy) which was refered to by Lenin as a 'tactical retreat' from communism as Russia was not ready economically for the communist ideals and the war communism policy. The policy was capitalist and strayed from the communist ideals, however it was necessary in getting Russia back on it's feet and putting down peasant uprisings which threatened the Bolshevik government.
There were more, these are two of the main ones, Sparticus Educational is a good site to read about both War Communism and the NEP along with more of Russian History.
