The word "Nazi" is an abbreviation for the German words for "national" and "socialism". This is a form of socialism based on nationality.

To some extent we have the same thing in the United States when we think that everything that is American is wonderful and everything that is foreign is bad.

National socialism is an extreme form of patriotism.

So, at its most simple form, it can appear attractive as a philosophy. At least initially. The Germans thought that all the bad things happening in Germany were caused by people who were not German but who lived there. Sort of what the Old Testament would describe as a resident alien - when someone who was not an Israelite lived in Israel. This can be distinguished from an itenerant alien according to the Old Testament.

In America we see the same problem when all of our problems are blamed on people who live here but who don't seem to be true Americans.

Today, in the United States, national socialism's most glaring voice comes from the Tea Party when they talk about Barack Obama not being a real American and they blame all the problems of the entire United States on him and his supposed lack of American-ness.

These arguments by the Tea Party are attractive to a lot of Americans and you can see how a candidate like that could actually be elected like Hilter was in Germany in the 30's.
