Roman Catholic AnswerDemons, unfortunately, have enormous powers: they are fallen angels and retain all of their angelic powers. Lucifer was the most powerful angel that God ever made, and he is quite capable of destroying the entire world if God did not restrain him. Most of the power that they can have over an individual is up to the individual since God restrains the demons. But remember that Jesus called Satan (Lucifer) the "prince of this world", as, since the fall of Adam and Eve, mankind has given him this position. Anytime that people give him an inch, he takes it, and can make lives miserable in this world, and eternally disastrous in the next. Demonic activity is on the rise due to the secularization of the modern world and turning away from the Church, which holds the only power great enough to restrain the demons. Amorth is the chief exorcism for the diocese of Rome (the Holy Father's diocese, and thus his chief exorcist). Fr. Amorth gives some helpful advice as to what to avoid and things to do. More powerful than any exorcism, though, is regular confession, and reception of the Most Holy Eucharist. Sticking close to Jesus gives one more than enough to fight the demons.

They were powerful as angels and they are powerful as demons. What most people don't know is that God is the only one who can command demons. At least when it comes to bothering humans.
