The first president to appear on a circulating dollar coin was Dwight D. Eisenhower, on coins issued from 1971 to 1977. These were not silver coins, though. They were made of copper-nickel like dimes, quarters, and halves.
Starting in 2007, the Presidential Dollar coins feature portraits of all non-living U.S. presidents in the order they served. Four coins will be released each year. It's expected that the series will end in 2016 or 2017. Again, these coins are not silver; they're made of the same gold-colored brass alloy used for all current $1 coins.
