The Golgi tendon prevents muscles from overstretching by partially flexing the opposing (antagonist) muscle. However, after about 30 seconds of a stretch, it releases the antagonistic muscle and allows you to stretch further. That is why its suggested to do most stretches for at least 30 seconds.
