A REF error message is a message that is used in the Windows Excel program, part of the Office package, in that there is an error input or output in an excel cell data pack.
An error message begins with the pound sign (#).
You will close all windows related to that particular copy of Excel. You can open several instances of Excel. When you quit one, you do not affect the other sessions that are open.

Check which version of Excel you have (maybe 2003?) and make sure the file was created on the same version or earlier. If someone has sent you a file created on Excel 2007, you can bang on the keyboard all you want but it won't open if you have an older version. There is no reason why you cannot type that in. As there are letters in it, it will be treated by Excel as text.
after much reading try this:1. Antivirus software may be interfering, disable it temprorarly2. Disable offline files3.File name is too long (including c:\xxx\xxx\) cannot be more than 2184. run Excel in Safe mode (control+click) on excel
I don't know about Excel 2007 but in 2003 you cannot do it with a macro. An inherent feature constratint of Excel 2003.
Most likely : Someone else on the network is already using the file. Ask them to close it & then reopen the file. (The error message normally indicates which person is using the file.)
