Virginia had problems with the slavery issue and chose to join the Confederacy. Since it is close to Washington D. C. there were many battles on Virginia's soil. After the war, Virginia suffered from Reconstruction. A large section of the agriculture in Virginia was tobacco and with the health issues that tobacco brings, it has been hard for people to change from tobacco growing to other crops or jobs.
