Each side of the US Civil War faced the problem of securing supply lines to keep their armies in the field. Here are a number of problems;* Wagons and good roads could feed field armies over a considerable distance;

* Necessary horses and mules could not be properly fed however, because they consumed almost ten times the amount of food than the soldiers; and

* Soldiers could be fed if fodder for their animals could be obtained as an army went deep into enemy territory.
