Cold winters often killed many people, as they lacked heaters like today. Winters were generally colder than they were now. A combination of these two led many people to freeze to death or catch a cold and die.

The leader of the Massachusetts bay colony, John Winthrop, had very strict rules on the religion its settlers can believe in. This created many protests. Many settlers who argued against John Winthrop and the high position ministers, were expelled from the colony, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Anne Hutchinson, Roger Williams, and Thomas Hooker were a few of these people.

Anne Hutchinson then founded a colony that joined up with Roger's, Providence, to create Rhode Island.
