The first settlers to Australia were arrivals from Malaysia some 40 to 50 thousand years ago. At the time sea levels were lower and crossing the various straits was easier. These original settlers faced the problems of identifying the food resources of the new land and the acclimatization to new living conditions.
As sea levels rose at the end of the ice age the colonists were increasingly isolated from their origins.
Captain Arthur Phillip, as Governor of the new colony of New South Wales, faced many obstacles in his attempts to establish the new colony. British farming methods, seeds and implements were unsuitable for use in the different climate and soil. Much of the seed had gone rotten or been eaten by rats on the eight-month boat journey, and the tools were unable to withstand the rough, rocky, hard soil of the colony, causing them to quickly break.
New South Wales faced near-starvation in its first two years. However, under Phillip's rationing and sensible direction, the colony finally succeeded in developing a solid foundation, agriculturally and economically, thanks to the perseverance of Captain Arthur Phillip. He also worked to improve understanding with the local Aborigines.
