World War Two began in September of 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. France and England both had mutual aggression treaties with Poland, which required any nation which had signed to come to the aid of a nation which had signed which was under attack. Neither France nor England had invested very much into their respective military during the years after World War One, wheras Germany had built its military back up from the severe losses suffered in WWI. This allowed Germany to introduce many new weapons, and to build large amounts of them. Germany pioneered the use of paratroopers during an invasion, as part of the Blitzkrieg battle plan, wherein a ground assualt is coupled with air attacks.

Germany overran all opposition on the Continent with in a few months, and almost captured most of the British army, which had been trapped on the beaches at Dunkirk. A huge sealift was organized by the British, which saved the majority of the men, however, nearly all weapons were abandoned on the beach. Under the Lend-Lease plan with the United States, Britain began trying to build its military back up, but the convoys from the US were frequently attacked by wolfpacks of German U-boats, which resulted in large amounts of shipping being sunk. At the same time, Germany was staging the Blitz, which was what the British called the bombing raids by German aircraft. Although the Blitz did not result in large numbers of casualties, it disrupted the war effort considerably.

The United States entered WWII after Japan staged a sneak attack on American bases in the Pacific Ocean basin, including Pearl Harbor. The US also had not invested much into the military after WWI, and it soon was apparent that nearly all of the American weaponry was completely out of date. Air power had become the dominant weapon in WWII, yet the US did not have a fighter aircraft that was anywhere near as advanced as the Japanese Zero, the German Me-109, and the FW-190. The American Sherman tank was far too lightly armoured to survive a duel with the German Tiger tanks, and American submarines where still extremely primative. The US only had four aircraft carriers, and no modern planes to fly off of them, nor were there any numbers of heavy bombers, such as the B-17.

For these reasons, the Allies suffered reversal after reversal in the early days of the war, and it was not until early 1944 that new weapons, aircraft, and ships became available in any number.

Well, they had the same problems on any other day, except that they were parachuting hundreds of men into a battlefield to get gunned down by the Germans.
