Exactly what did happen: such a huge territory and the accompanying long borders, especially with a comparatively small army, meant they couldn't control everytihng at once. As soon as concurrent uprising and invasion began, there wasn't any ability to repel all invaders and still maintain the territorial control. Basically, it got too big to manage.
