Ah! this is what I do. I fill the disposal with ice cubes. While I am putting in the ice cubes, I will sprinkle in some powdered cleanser. I have also used dishwashing liquid. When it is full, I turn the water on just a little and turn on the disposal. The ice offers some friction without doing harm, and the cleanser cleans away built up dirt. This has never failed to solve the problem for me. Stick a lemon down there and turn it on.
