This would probably be a psychiatrist. A major difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that a psychiatrist can prescribe medication, which is often used in treating schizophrenia.
A variety of professionals could work with this schizophrenic. Here's a list of professionals that may be working with the schizophrenic:
1. psychiatrist: would be in charge of medication management, which would more than likely include an anti-psychotic medication or possibly a combination. In this case, an injectable anti-psychotic may be tried. Risperdal Consta is an example. This person would probably have the most interaction with the patient, because he or she could talk to the patient about day-to-day issues as well as prescribe medicine.
2. RN: would be in charge of giving the client his shot and may also work with the client on filling a medication planner.
3. outpatient case manager: would work with the client on developing interpersonal skills, activities of daily living skills, assist client with obtaining entitlements (i.e. social security disability, medicaid, HUD, etc), advocacy, etc.
4. partial hospitalization tx team: this includes a day treatment program, where a client goes all day and attends various groups on interpersonal skills, ADLs, illness management, etc
Given that this client is displaying severe symptoms, it may be likely that the client will be hospitalized in an inpatient facility until the client is stabilized on meds. It would not be likely that this client would be involved in individual therapy at this point.
Even though you haven't listed any options - I'm guessing 'Psychiatrist' is one of your options.
