At his birthday celebration, King Herod promised to give his daughter whatever she asked and she asked for the head of John the Baptist. This is recorded in chapter 14 of The Gospel According to St. Matthew in The New Testament:
6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst and pleased Herod;
7 Hence, he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8 And she, being instigated by her mother, said, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
9 And the king was grieved, yet because of the oaths and those reclining at table with him, he commanded itto be given.
10 And he sent men and beheaded John in the prison.
11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

Who danced at King Herod's court?

This Herod was Herod Antipas, younger son of Herod the Great. Not a king, he was Tetrarch of Gallilee following his father's death. The daughter of Herodias danced in his court on the occasion of his birthday. Although she is not named, she is usually assumed to have been Salome. As a reward for her dancing, Herod promised her whatever she wished. Prompted by her mother, she asked for the head of John the Baptist. Reluctantly, Herod complied in order to save face in the presence of his court. Matthew 14:6 But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. Mark 6:22 And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.
