The qualifications to be an equine (or horse) veterinarian are the same as for every other kind of veterinarian: graduate from an accredited school of veterinary medicine, pass the NAVLE and become licensed in the state you wish to practice in.

You must attend at least 8 years of schooling to become a vet. You can specialize in horses by becoming an Equine Vet. As an Equine Vet you will take care of pretty much any and all Equine ailments. You're a vet, you would do the same things for a horse that your doctor does for you.

The answer is in the initials. DVM is doctor of vet. medicine. Vets are doctors. They had to go to a four year college after high school, taken pre-vet classes. After you get your college degree you must apply to a vet school. You must have very solid grades and impressive extra-curricular activities. Some of the best schools like to see college students that have spend time working in a related field. Vet school is usually 3 to 4 years of intense study and clinic experience. It's a long, hard, expensive road but well worth the effort. Good luck.
