Surprise first and foremost. They had better quality aircraft, and more of them because our aircraft carriers were out at sea at the time. and they had more experienced pilots, as they had been fighting a war for several years against Korea and China so their pilots had real combat experience, where ours had none. There were other advantages also, but that would be my top three.

It required discipline to pull off the attack, particularly since it included kamikaze suicide attacks. Not every nation has soldiers who will commit suicide when ordered to do so.
