After the battle of Marathon, when the Athenian army had defeated the Persian army, the Athenians realised that the Persian fleet was sailing around to their city to capture in their absence. The 18,000 strong army ran the 26 miles back to Athens and arrived back just in time to protect the city. This is celebrated by today's Marathon races.
The difference is that the Athenians ran in sandals carrying their weapons, shields and armour, compared with today's pampered athletes.
