Andrew Johnson was US senator from Tennessee when the war began. He remained loyal to the union when Tennessee seceded. In March 1862 Lincoln appointed him military governor of Tennessee with the rank of Brigadier General. In 1864 he was elected Vice-President.
He was a captain in the Illinois militia. And while President, he was Commander in Chief.
His rank was that of General, the highest rank attainable in the army of the Confederacy during the Civil War. He held the rank of Colonel in the United States Army before he resigned his commission.
