A vigorous economy supplemented by a wide-flung system of trade & commerce, an industrious citizenry, an efficient professional military establishment enhanced by the most powerful & state-of-the-art navy afloat, and control of the global financial system as the successors of the Dutch burghers all contributed to the advantages enjoyed by the British, especially after the formation of Great Britain during the reign of Queen Anne
By 1763, Britain had driven France from India, part of the French Indian Wars. With a relatively small number of military forces, Britain expanded its role in India. For all practical purposes, Britain conquered India because of India's disunity and backwardness. Here is a summary of the factors that led Britain to control India:
1. India could not cope with the superior military power of Britain;
2. India's multitude of languages, more than a dozen, with over 200 dialects caused a lack of communication among Indians;
3. India's religious divisions resulted in internal conflicts which Britain was able to use to her advantage;
4. The Indian Caste System divided the people and kept them from effectively cooperating with each other, to Britain's advantage; and
5. India was in a state of political disunity. It was divided among more than 600 independent states, each headed by its own native prince, or rajah.
Basically this allowed Britain to develop a strategy of divide & conquer.

The Monroe Doctrine was important to The US and Great Britain as well. The doctrine was aimed primarily at France and Russia. It in fact had the blessing of Great Britain. The economics of it were of prime concern to Great Britain for several reasons. By declaring that the Western Hemisphere was no longer open to further colonization by the Great Powers of Europe, the doctrine also declared that the US would have no interest in making colonies for itself. This was welcomed by Great Britain as it owned Canada. It also, via its naval fleet protected its commercial interests with the newly independent nations of Latin America. Further to this, it laid out a warning to Russia concerning its activities in the great northwest, which helped Great Britain as well. The doctrine laid a foundation for preventing France to take adventures in the Western Hemisphere. And, that concern was genuine as later in the century Mexico became a target for French imperialism.
