By 1763, Britain had driven France from India, part of the French Indian Wars. With a relatively small number of military forces, Britain expanded its role in India. For all practical purposes, Britain conquered India because of India's disunity and backwardness. Here is a summary of the factors that led Britain to control India:

1. India could not cope with the superior military power of Britain;

2. India's multitude of languages, more than a dozen, with over 200 dialects caused a lack of communication among Indians;

3. India's religious divisions resulted in internal conflicts which Britain was able to use to her advantage;

4. The Indian Caste System divided the people and kept them from effectively cooperating with each other, to Britain's advantage; and

5. India was in a state of political disunity. It was divided among more than 600 independent states, each headed by its own native prince, or rajah.

Basically this allowed Britain to develop a strategy of divide & conquer.
