The Blackfoot group (Blood, Piegan and Blackfoot tribes) and their allies the Sarci and Atsena lived on the far northern Plains, in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northern Montana. Parts of their region were mountainous, but most was empty grasslands with very few trees except along rivers and smaller watercourses.
An odd feature of the Blackfoot country were the buffalo "wallows", which were large depressions in the dusty soil made by buffalo repeatedly rolling in dust baths; in winter these depressions filled with snow that melted in spring, leaving isolated pools and ponds.
Another odd feature were the "puffball mushrooms" found in that area; these were considered sacred by the Blackfoot people, who thought they were stars that had fallen from the sky.
