Jamestown, founded in 1607, is considered to be the first permanent and successful British settlement in North America. It was located in the present-day state of Virginia, in the central region of America's eastern seaboard.
The east coast.
Improvment: Specifically, from southern Maine to as far south as coastal Georgia during the late sixteenth through the early-to-mid eighteenth centuries. The first places were North Carolina (then a part of Virginia), Massachusetts/Plymouth Colony, and Maine. The English later spread throughout New England, New Netherland (more or less New York), and the Carolinas, to include Georgia. Later, following the French and Indian War the English settled along the St. Lawrence River valley in present-day Canada and Florida. This included the southern portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, as well as modern-day Florida as they were a part of West or East Florida. There were also pockets of the English who had managed to congregate and settle in relatively small numbers in Illinois along the Mississippi River and Indiana along the Ohio River. The English also moved into what is now Kentucky and Tennessee from Virginia and/or North Carolina. However, when the colonists began moving west of the Allegheny, or today, Appalachian, Mountains, British control of the American colonies was almost over. Canada remained loyal to Great Britain, as did the Florida colonies. In short, from the East Coast to the Mississippi, and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.
The British settled (in the world) in at least one of all the countries in each continent. However, about 1 in every 4 people in the world was ruled by Great Britain, so the British Empire covered up only about 1 quarter of the world, so their motto 'the sun never sets on the British Empire' would actually work, by at least 1 continent's country's (that was being ruled over Great Britain) time would be daytime.

The first Europeans to arrive in North America -- at least the first for whom there is solid evidence -- were Norse, traveling west from Greenland, where Erik the Red had founded a settlement around the year 985. In 1001 his son Leif is thought to have explored the northeast coast of what is now Canada and spent at least one winter there. Many European fishermen fished the waters off the northern coasts of North America and the US but did not settle there. The Spanish conquistadores explored the Southwest of what would become the US in the 1500s but did not establish permanent settlements. Oraibi is a pueblo in Northern Arizona located on a mesa, north of Winslow. It was built around the year 1150 and was discovered by Pedro de Tova, a lieutenant of Coronado, in 1540. Oraibi was the most important pueblo of the Hopi Indians as it was the oldest, continually inhabited locale in North America. Today, Oraibi is little more than a ruin. St. Augustine, Florida, was founded in 1565 by the Spanish. The British tried to establish a settlement in Virginia, known as Roanake, Virginia, in 1587 but the colony, known as the lost colony, did not survive. The Jamestown colony in 1607 was the first permanent British colony in North America. Can yuu make this any shorter? ._."
