There were not even horses in the region, as these later bred from those who escaped the Spanish herds. The Spanish explored the southwest US in the mid-1500's, and "cowboys" from the US and Texas did not begin to settle there until some 300 years later in the early 1800's.The first Spaniards may have been under Cabeza de Vaca around 1536.(For more information, see the related link.)
