He was a former Church of England minister in both Plymouth and Salem having turned down a position in Boston. He may have been a Baptist of sorts because he did favor credobaptism and he was aligned with Anne Hutchinson and her followers for a period of time after his exile from Massachusetts. He co-founded the First Baptist Church in America in 1638 but remained with that church for only a few months. His doctrine was unique borrowing as he saw fit from the various sects.
