In Canada,

There are two main initial nursing designations.

RN - Registered Nurse, Four Years of Study. The Bachelor of science in nursing degree (BScN) is obtained from a university. Some colleges have a collaborative program with universities which allows the college to hold classes at their site while the university supplies the curriculum.

In the end the degree is granted by the university.

RPN - Registered Practical Nurse, Two Years of Study. The RPN designation is given through a college which supplies the nurse with a diploma.

RNs are trained with a strong theory background which provides the nurse with the ability to critically think and make decisions which will impact a patients life at a higher level than an RPN. RNs typically take more complex patients and because of their ability to problem solve, many hospitals will only hire RNs. To become an RN one should have grades around 70% or higher; a strong desire to learn (your knowledge will change the outcome of a patient's life); a strong desire to help others; the ability to recognize your own values as this will impact your ability to care for those who's beliefs and values you may not agree with. Registered Nurses run hospital units. They are expected to recognize when a doctor must be called in for assistance on a patient. Experienced RNs know what the want from the physician before they request the physician.

Once a BScN degree is attained the nursing student must write an exam administered by the nursing regulatory body of that province/territory or state(in the USA). Once the individual passes this exam they are considered a registered nurse. RPN process is similar.

Once a registered nurse there are many many branches that can be explored. Including becoming a Nurse Practitioner (in between an RN and Dr.) - They can diagnose and write prescriptions for certain diseases and medications respectively.

The list goes on and on and on.

For a RN the requirments are classes that include: One year of Basic Chemistry, Basic Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and two years of Psycology. After you pass those classes you then need to apply to a nursimg program and take the TEAS test which ranks or places you into the program. Talk to a nursing adviser at your school.

The exact requirements for attainment of a Registered Nurse degree vary by country to country and from state to state in the US. An RN degree in the US will take between two and four years to achieve, depending on the state requirements and whether the degree is pursued on a full time or part time basis, and will require a minimum number of successfully completed classroom hours in chemistry, pharmacology, biology, anatomy and other areas in addition to a variable number of clinical experience hours as a student nurse.
