Early 20th Century Japan

After discovering the industrial tools of the West, Japan set out to build its national status, mainly by conflicts with the Russians and Chinese. But the Japanese islands themselves had few of the necessary raw materials, so they sought to conquer nearby Asian countries that did have them. Metals and oil were the targets in Indonesia and Malaysia, while China was mainly supplying a slave workforce, agriculture and some minerals.

Japan was a small island with a bad history of attacking other nations, unprovoked, and had little Natural Resources of its own. It relied heavily on the USA to gather its materials like oil and metal, which are necessary when fighting a war. But because of bad relations, the US limited trade with Japan, and so it was forced to find other ways to replenish itself (which it didn't, and was nearly starving itself to death when the US dropped the a-bomb in 1945).
