The Roman Empire needed the same resources as other states. It needed agricultural production and animal husbandry to provide vegetables, fruit, meat, dairy products and eggs. The city of Rome imported huge amounts of grain, olive oil and wine. It needed timber for scaffoldings, cranes, waterwheels, frames to build houses, shipbuilding, furniture making and the like. It needed metals, such as iron, copper, tin, zinc, silver and gold for metal working, to make metal tools, utensils, pans, weapons and to mint coins. It needed fabrics such as wool, cotton and lined to make textiles. Hides were needed for shoes, some items of garment and for other uses.Clay was used to make terracotta pottery and tiles. Volcanic stones (tuff, peperino, travertine and the like) limestine, marble, granite and porphyry were used for construction. There was also glass making.
