In all countries, the railways created large increases in trade and travel, bringing industrial, agricultural and housing development to the larger cities on the route; and a greater range of goods and food to the populace.

More subtly, the ease of travel increased people's mobility, allowing them more readily to seek education, work etc. elsewhere.

And of course the railways too, created a lot of employment of their own, especially in steam days when the railways generally were more labour-intensive to operate and the companies carried out most of their own equipment design, building and maintenance.

For example, a steam-hauled train needed a crew of three (driver, fireman and guard) plus a gang of shed staff to prepare and service the locomotive before and after the journey. A diesel or electric train needs only driver and guard. Signalling also needed many more manned signal-boxes than it does now, stations were far more heavily staffed and track maintenance needed many more men than it does now. So the railway companies had many employees simply to run the service.

In some countries & regions the increased ease of access also boosted tourism.
