Women at the Seneca Falls Convention demanded to be equal in areas of society where they were treated as inferior to men, such as:

- Marriage (if a woman married, all her property belonged to her husband)

- Employment (it was difficult for a woman to be taken seriously and hired in almost any field)

- Education (very few universities would admit female students)

- Religion (mainstream churches would not ordain female ministers)

Also, in an historical debate, the women (and some men!) at the convention demanded a woman's right to vote. The convention took place in 1848. The vote would not be gained for women until 1920, but the debate at Seneca Falls was a major event that helped shape the women's movement.

Some people at the convention did not want to support a woman's right to vote, because they felt the idea was too radical for their time and that no one would take them seriously. It was actually a man, Frederick Douglass, who spoke in favor of women's suffrage and convinced the convention to get behind it. Douglass, a black man, was a former slave who said he could not accept the right of black men to vote unless women had the same right.

Another notable person at the convention was Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the main writer of the "Declaration of Rights and Sentiments". This was a passionately-written document, modeled on the US Declaration of Independence, which explained why the convention was demanding women's rights.

At the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848, many women who wanted voting rights gathered at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Seneca Falls, NY. They discussed women's rights, and addressed the matter of women's suffrage fiercely. Elizabeth Cady Stanton drew up the Declaration of Sentiments during the meeting. Modeled after the Declaration of Independence, this document stated the many reasons women should be allowed to vote in all elections. Finally, after many meetings of the suffragists similar to the Convention, the 19th amendment allowing women's suffrage was ratified in 1920.
