After crossing the Rocky Mountains, the Lewis and Clark expedition followed the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean. This river offered a route that allowed them to reach the coast of Oregon and complete their journey westward.
Lewis and Clark split up during their expedition and Lewis stayed near to the Missouri River and Clark went south through the fringes on Montana till he found the Yellowstone River, which was also a tributary of the Missouri river.
