Built between 1811 and 1837, the National Road (Cumberland Road) connected the Potomac and Ohio valleys. It crossed the Ohio River in Wheeling, then in Virginia. The road began in Cumberland, Maryland, went west through southwestern Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, and Indiana, as far as Vandalia, Illinois.
This was only about 50 miles from the present site of St. Louis, Missouri on far (west) side of the Mississippi River.

The Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery actually began in Washington, DC, then traveled through Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania as Meriwether Lewis gained knowledge and supplies in preparation for the expedition. Once Lewis had a keelboat ready, he travled down the Ohio River, through the states of Ohio and Kentucky, and the future states of West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. After training at Camp River Dubois, Illinois, the actual expidition officially began on May 14, 1804. The expidition traveled through the Louisiana Purchase, through the future states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon.
