How many returned to Gettysburg after the Battle of Gettysburg?

After the Civil War, the Grand Army of the Republic would hold reunions on the battlefield during the July 4th holiday. It was these reunions and the efforts of Daniel Sickles, (who commanded III corps and lost a leg during the battle) that Gettysburg became a National Battlefield. In 1913, on the 50th Anniversary of the Battle some 12,000 veterans Southern and Northern, pitched their tents on that hallowed ground. They were all old, but they came, drawn to the history that they had made. For many it was their last reunion.
