Jackson pushed for Van Buren's nomination in 1836 and did what he could to get him elected. He no doubt played a helpful role. By 1840, times had changed. The country was in a depression, in part because of the economic policies of Van Buren which were mostly a continuation of those of Jackson. Jackson had been out of office for 4 years and still supported Jackson, but his popularity was not enough to save Van Buren from defeat.
