The gnostic component of Islam are the mystics, better known as the Sufi. The literalists are the Salafists (also incorrectly called Fundamentalists).
Sufis are NOT a Religion or Doctrine! Sufis are Mystics or Mystical! The Sufi follows a Path or a Mystical Way of Life! Sufi is NOT a ism! The Sufi life is based on Experience, NOT on Dogma or a Doctrine! The Sufi word may mean Wisdom(Fr. Greek)! The Sufi strives toward UNION with God! dervish The Sufi are the mystics of Islam. They follow an ascetic lifestyle in search of the truth and some believe in the possibility of obtaining a mystical union with God through ritual dancing, music, or meditation. Sufis believe that Allah reveals himself to individuals on a personal level. There were many female mystics of Islam including Rabi'a of Basra. Little is known for sure about Rabi'a al -'Adawiyya al-Qaysiyya (known as Rabi'a of Basra), revered as one of the earliest and greatest Sufi mystic ascetics in Islam.

Sunni sect is the largest sect of Islam. Shia are in very less number. Sufi is not a sect. It is a way of life for some of the Muslims who seek pleasure of Almighty Allah by excessive prayer and devotion.
The Whirling Dervishes are an order of Sufis and Sufism is a sect of Islam. Therefore, the Whirling Dervishes are both Sufi and Islamic.
