Flag Officer Charles Henry Davis played an important role in the US Navy's Mississippi River operations early on in the war. In 1862 he suffered a small defeat against a Confederate river flotilla and managed to carry on his duties. Perhaps his most important contribution he made in the Union's war efforts was to capture Memphis, Tennessee.
