yes he founded Pennsylvania

Well he was definitely an important figure from a historical perspective. He founded Pennsylvania and instilled brilliant new ideas including religious tolerance and a well advertised and well organized colony. However, it is also to be noted that he was not necessarily famous back then. He only stayed in the colony for 4 years and then became to close to James II who was Catholic and arrested for treason and "died full of sorrows" (quote from my APUSH book) so yes he was a famous person now that we look back, but not necessarily famous if your looking at the perspective of those in the 1600s

The role of religon in the American colonies?

It depended on the colony. An example of this was Plymouth colony whose religious views guided everyone from the colony. William Penn established Pennsylvania as a Quaker colony. While Rhode Island was more secular. In most of the colonies to be able to vote a man had to own land and belong to the church. The relationship between church and state in the colonies was very strong. This is one reason why the founders wanted to make sure there was a separation of church and state.
