"Manifest Destiny" is a term most closely associated with the westward movement of American claims in the 19th century and Presidents Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk; however, imperialism in the 20th century displays this mindset as well. Teddy Roosevelt in the 20th century is a good example of this idea. His foreign policy was driven by widening the U.S.'s sphere of influence, especially his involvement in Panama's independence (in exchange for the canal) and his involvement in the Russo-Japanese war. Teddy Roosevelt's policies and imperialism shaped the U.S. because it set up a mindset of continually looking for land to take into its care or to take into its country. With the frontier nearly populated, there was also a need to find another one.
