The Judges were the rulers and military leaders in times of war before the Kings were selected.

The first Judge was Joshua (the supposed author of the book of Joshua), several important Judges (but probably not all) are named in the book of Judges, and the last Judge was Samuel who was involved in the selection of King Saul and King David.

Unlike the later Kings the Judges could not tax the people nor maintain a standing army in time of peace and they lived like all the other people (no palace, courtiers, harems, etc.).

The judges also played an important role in bringing Israel back to worshiping God and obeying God's Law. In the book of Judges there is a repetition of - backsliding, oppression, repentance and deliverance.

The Judges served for about 365 years (1244 to 879 BCE, according to traditional chronology), from the death of Joshua until the time of King Saul. They served as Judges, as military leaders for brief events when the nation was under threat, and as spiritual leaders. They were not rulers. Othniel

In addition to the above, there have been regular judges, from the time of Moses (Exodus ch.18) down to this day. These are Torah-scholars whose function is to adjudicate disputes according to Torah-procedure.
