The French had claimed the river was theirs, along with many other parts of North America. They called it "New France." Fur traders from Pennsylvania were attracted to it, and tensions were mounting between the French and British colonists. Not to mention that it was a sacred hunting ground for the Native Americans. So, the Ohio River Valley set the stage for an enormous part of American history.
