The role the church played in Massachusetts was to separate completely from the other New England congregations, so no non-religious person would sabotage the church.
In the early colonial days and even after Massachusetts became a US State, the Protestant Church played a large part of the lives, culture and politics of this State. One role was propagate the rule of law, another was later to advocate freedom from Great Britain. Not all churches however were in favor of that but many were. Another not so envious role was to create an atmosphere of hostility against Roman Catholics. In the early part of US history, a Nunnery of the Catholic Church was burned to the ground. Many in Protestant churches resented that other Protestants sent their daughters to Catholic schools because for the most part, they were against higher education for women. Catholic institutions taught higher education. Some Protestants also were afraid that Catholic schools would promote Catholicism over Protestantism.
