If you are referring to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire you are referring to the impact of the Catholic Church on Western Europe. The Catholic Church was originally called the Latin or Western Church and was the main form of Christianity in the western part of this empire. The Greek or Eastern Church (which later came to be called Orthodox) was the main form of Christianity in the eastern part of the empire, which continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years after the fall of the western part of the empire. The Orthodox Church became the church of several eastern European countries.
All of the Germanic conquerors of the western part of the empire were Arian Christians, except for the Franks who were pagan. All of their kings converted to Catholicism. This aligned them with the conquered populations, which were Catholic and avoided conflict with their spiritual leader, the Bishop of Rome, or pope.
In 753 Pope Stephen II asked Pepin, the king of the Franks, to intervene in Italy, where the Lombards were threatening Rome. Pepin defeated the Lombards and in 756 gave lands in central Italy to the papacy. These lands were to become the Papal States. In 772, Pope Adrian I asked Charlemagne to intervene in Italy because the Lombards has seized some papal towns. Charlemagne expelled the Lombards for Italy. In 800 In 799, Pope Leo III crowned him Roman Emperor, making him the first emperor in Western Europe since the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. Leo III did this to forge an alliance with this powerful ruler and assert the independence of the Church of Rome (the Catholic Church) and the bishop of Rome from the emperor of the eastern Part of the Roman Empire (which historians call Byzantine Empire) and its church (the Orthodox Church), who was interfering with the affairs of Rome. Charlemagne then went on to conquer northern Germany, which was pagan, and promoted the Christianisation of its peoples. This was carried out by missionaries sent by the pope. From then on, the Catholic Church was a powerful force in the politics of Western Europe.
