Since Earth's atmosphere absorbs and scatters blue, the light reaching the Moon is red, almost a brick red when you look at the eclipsed Moon.

It is the shadow that causes the eclipse. The shadow of the Moon on the surface of the Earth causes a total solar eclipse in that area. The shadow of the Earth on the Moon causes a lunar eclipse.
