The Louisian Purchase in 1803. We bought the land from France for $15 million. France was the original European power to own Lousiana, but lost it in the Seven Years' War. The British got the land east of the Mississippi while the Spanish got the rest of Louisiana. In 1800 the Spanish gave their part of Louisiana back to France.
This event greatly helped the US on its way to achieving manifest destiny.
