A saltwater fish can't get enough oxygen from fresh water and vice versa. I believe it has something to do with the fact that salt water provides a certain pH balance that they need. Also some fishes can switch back and forth from (salt to fresh or fresh to salt) like the Salmon. Why... probably base on how their bodies evolve so that they can adapt and tolerate such changes. As for other saltwater fishes, if placed in freshwater, the pH balance and oxygen intake will become totally unbalance and end up killing the poor fishes.
