Nixon's childhood was not altogether pleasant. His family did not have much money and once he was old enough he had to get up early everyday and wash fruit and vegetables for his father's market. One of his brothers died of encephalitis while he was a boy. He tended to accept things as they came and tried to make the most of his lot.
