The study of microbes (tiny organisms that can only be seen under a microscope), is called Microbiology. The word was created ("built") from prefix, root word, and suffix from Greek language origins.

The prefix, micro, means "tiny/minute/millionth".

The root word, bio, means "life".

The suffix, ology, means "study of".

Micro + bio + ology = Microbiology = The study of very small lifeforms that can only be seen under a microscope.

Microbes (microorganisms) were discovered by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1675. He invented and used his own microscope to identify them. Theories of their existence had been offered throughout civilized history before that by men of science and medicine, such as Roman scientist, Marcus Terentius Varro in the 1st century BC. But, until van Leeuwenhoek designed and used his microscope, no observable proof had been available.

Others of scientific and historical note who studied and added to the early understanding and theories of microbes included:

* Abu Ali ibn Sina (aka, Avicenna), a Persian scholar who wrote a book in 1020 mentioning them,

* Ibn Khatima, from 14th century Spain during the Black Death plague,

* Girolamo Fracastoro, 16th Century Venetian physician, * Robert Hooke, 17th Century Englishman known as "The Father of Microscopy", * Lazzaro Spallanzani, 18th Century Italian who pioneered in the field of sterilization, * Louis Pasteur, 19th Century French microbiologist who added significantly to the works of Spallanzani which eventually led to his "Pasteurization" and his invention of the first rabies vaccine, * Heinrich Hermann Robert Koch (aka Robert Koch) of 19th Century Germany proved bacteriologic contagion using anthrax to spread the disease among cattle, isolated Tuberculosis bacteria (which earned him the 1905 Nobel Prize), and Cholera. He is considered a founder of microbiology due to these major works, * Paul Ehrlich, from what is now Poland, created the first antibacterial drug in the 20th century and was awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize for his work in immunology. He also made major advances in the treatments of Diptheria, Syphillis, and Sleeping Sickness, as well as in Gram Staining techniques for bacterial studies. * Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, Russian (Ukraine) microbiologist who shared the 1908 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Ehrilich with his work on phagocytes (e.g.,"white blood cells", Leucocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, etc.), and the immune system. * Sahachiro Hata,20th Century Japanese bacteriologist who developed the drug to treat Syphillis along with Ehrilich.

Today the fields of study of microbes have branched into highly specialized areas and there are many important scientists and physicians who have contributed in the years from the early 20th century through today. Some of those fields of study are headed by:

* Virologists,

* Mycologists,

* Bacteriologists,

* Immunologists,

* Microbial Ecologists, * Microbial Evolutionists,

* Pathologists and Pathogenic Microbiologists,

* Biotechnological Microbiologists, * Environmental Microbiologists, * Food Microbiologists, * Genomologists, * Microbial Geneticists, * Molecular Biologists, * Microbial Physiologists, * Epidemiologists, * Pharmacologists, * Molecular Pathogenologists, * Proteologists, * Anaerobic Microbiologists, * Geomicrobiologists, * Industrial Microbiologists, * Bioremediationists, * Aeromicrobiologists, * Bacterial Geneticists, * Microbial Taxonomists, * Antimicrobiologists
