Microbes (microorganisms) were discovered by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1675. He invented and used his own microscope to identify them. Theories of their existence had been offered throughout civilized history before that by men of science and medicine, such as Roman scientist, Marcus Terentius Varro in the 1st century BC. But, until van Leeuwenhoek designed and used his microscope, no observable proof had been available.

He also made major advances in the treatments of Diptheria, Syphillis, and Sleeping Sickness, as well as in Gram Staining techniques for bacterial studies. * Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, Russian (Ukraine) microbiologist who shared the 1908 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Ehrilich with his work on phagocytes (e.g.,"white blood cells", Leucocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, etc.), and the immune system. * Sahachiro Hata,20th Century Japanese bacteriologist who developed the drug to treat Syphillis along with Ehrilich.
