There was no mercy. Satan, Adam, and Eve all received a death sentence. From Genesis 3:15-24 Jehovah tells of how life will be from now on. Death, pain and suffering. But there is a hope, John 3:16 tells us how Gods son Jesus came to Earth to die for our sins so that one day we can gain back what Adam lost.

Indirectly, we infer God's mercy from Genesis 2:17. That verse states that Adam and Eve would die on the day they sinned. In his mercy after their sin, God did make them mortal but allowed them to live for a long time.
