The bible teaches that God owns everything, and man owes Him the first 10% of any increase.
There were other tithes as well:-
(1) That one tenth of the whole produce of the soil was to be assigned for the maintenance of the Levites (ie the priests).
(2) That a second tithe was to be used for the use of the temple and festival purposes.
(3) That in every third year, another tithe was to be used for the welfare of the poor, homeless, widows, etc
(These tithes took the place of our modern taxes, and welfare payments.)
The Old Testament law of tithes is not binding on Christians , but the principle remained:-
1Co 9:13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
1Co 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
Christians ought to willingly go beyond the old testament tithing laws if they can in deep gratitude due to Christ's sacrifice and what He has done and is doing both now and in the future for all eternity for us in consecrating both themselves and their substance to God.
But Christians are not to give if it causes hardship:-
1Ti 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
